Head Enlargening

Recipe, figures, and pictures by Doug Schroeder

For those of us who can't sculpt well and don't like Kenner's puny POTF2 heads: any vinyl head can be enlarged by sinking a screw into it, either from the top and/or the back, then heating the head so it retains the new shape after the screws are removed. The holes left can then be filled in with putty, clay, or whatever, and new hair can be sculpted (heck, even I can sculpt hair). I suggest drilling a small pilot hole down the center (or in the middle of the back, level with the nose). If the screw is off center, the resulting face will be noticably distorted. Use a series of screws, starting with a small one, then progressing to a larger one until the desired expansion is reached; this reduces distortions. This method will expand outlying features (nose) slower than the inlying ones (eyes) so the features are changed somewhat. (This can be good. I think my Lando looks MUCH more like Billy Dee williams than the unaltered Kenner version.) While the "head-screw method" can have some great results, it is tricky to get right. I suggest practicing on an extra head first. Good luck!
